John Waterhouse was an English painter known for adopting the Pre-Raphaelite pictorial style and subjects inspired by ancient Greek mythology.

According to legend, Adonis, the Greek god of beauty, desire, and rebirth, tragically died while hunting. Aphrodite (Venus to the Romans) rushed to his bedside, cutting herself on a rose thorn. The rose, symbol of Aphrodite, created pure and white, then turned a vivid crimson red, stained by her blood. A kiss from the goddess Aphrodite woke Adonis; thus, the cycle of life could continue.
